Data compression
As described on the data management page, compressing data is an easy way to:
minimise your usage of the mass storage.
group files together, which helps optimising the mass storage performances, and makes the process of handling large batches of small files.
speed up data transfer.
You can find out more about several data compression tools in the following pages. If you are not familiar with the terminal, or unsure about the tool you should use, please contact the GIGA bioinformatics team.
Hint
To compress data, you should log into the mass storage using SSH.
Warning
If you are not in a screen or tmux session and close the terminal or loose connection to the mass storage, the compression process will be aborted.
