Overview

The mass storage is a professional infrastructure of very large capacity (1.5 PB) managed by the UDI GIGA-MED, and provided by the GIGA for the storage of large scientific data. It is composed of:

  • a disk storage system located in the basement of the GIGA tower (B34),

  • two tape libraries. The first one is located at the SEGI (B26), while the other one is at the CHU datacenter (B34).

These storage systems are connected to the ULiège scientific backbone over an optical fibre network.

Note

The mass storage provides some very important advantages over external hard drives in terms of:

  • Safety - The backup policy prevent unwanted data losses.

  • Security - The level of protection against illegal access to the data is GDPR compliant and ISO 27001 certified. Indeed, to get access to the mass storage, you need to meet the requirements.

Terms of use

Attention

The mass storage is intended for large data storage. It is by no mean supposed to be used for small file storage or as a synchronised remote directory. For such a usage, refer to the other file management tools available at the ULiège.

The mass storage has been designed to store scientific data. To use it, you must adhere to the following terms of use.

The following types of data cannot be stored on the mass storage:

  • Personal data.

  • Professional data not related to the function carried out for the ULiège and/or CHU.

  • copyrighted material for which you do not have the rights.

  • documents of an obscene, pornographic, racist or hateful nature.

  • files that can decrease the stability of the system or increase its vulnerability.

The mass storage cannot be used to:

  • run malware or scripts that ca decrease the integrity of the system.

  • steal the identity and/or authentication information of other people.

  • hack into another system or access data that are not intended to you.

  • perform any advertising, commercial or illegal action.

  • break the law in any way and/or violate the privacy of others.

  • distribute or sell data or disk space.

To ensure the proper functioning of the mass storagen it is also prohibited to:

  • perform calculations or run analysis tools directly on the mass storage. If you need to perform computationaly intensive analyses, consider using the GIGA cluster or CÉCI clusters.

  • create files or folders in /stornext/snfs1 or /stornext/snfs1/SHARE (${HOME}/SHARE).

  • store raw data coming out of scientific equiment without the autorisation of the UDI GIGA-MED.
